JCook32.JPGAlong Route 14I am thinking this picture is early and probably is an "EARLY" attempt at building fox holes. We never had any training in Hawaii on foxhole digging. But we had to dig the BC's hole and the XO's in Hawaii. Lack of training shows here - I think we put it up for show and not survival. Again this early in Nam and might even be among the FIRST hole ever dug. Jan 17, 2012

JCook29.JPGFDC Tent - Field Version - May 1966After the "Pink Kitty", after the GP-small above-ground tent, after the submerged CONEX containers, this is what my FDC looked like out in the "boonies". Our FDC was arranged in a horseshoe trench; we could maneuver around the firing charts. The Operation was "Paul Revere"; the location is south of Duc Co". Jan 17, 2012

JCook30.JPGBase Piece - May 1966Joe notes to family back home: "These guys are members of the Base Piece Section; we do most of the firing. On all adjustment missions, we fire the BP. It is set over Battery Center. 10,000 rounds shot in Vietnam. This round (foreground) was shot at a suspected VC campsite. The whole battery fired it".Jan 17, 2012

JCook22a.jpg"Base Camp" - Jan 1966; FDC Trailer brought over from HawaiiCenter & Right: PFC Richard A. Williams & Sp4 Larry L. Black. They are shaving facing the FDC. We had been in-country from two to four days at this point. The FDC for "B" Battery was a 3/4-ton truck with generator. The FDC was known as the "Pink Kitty"; it was pink inside. It was made of plywood and brought over from Hawaii. See next photos for the progression of our FDC housing.
Our "wash area" is located where my right foot is.

JCook23.JPG"Base Camp" - Jan 1966 Armed & ReadyHere I am with my trusty.....M-14? Well, that's what we had, anyway. Note that the starch is still in the fatigue pants and my boots still have that "stateside" shine.Jan 14, 2012

JCook21.jpg"Base Camp" - Jan 1966This is our FDC location at Base Camp, Pleiku, 11Jan66. Sp4 Larry L. Black is half-turned to the camera, Sp4 James McBrayer, Jr is using the pick to make foxholes, Huckaby is by the "Pink Kitty". The "Pink Kitty" is the FDC training trailer that we brought over from Hawaii. We decided later that a plywood FDC trailer above ground was not a smart move. The picture is looking north, northwest.Jan 14, 2012
