Col. Saul A. 'Curley' Jackson, 79, of Fort Myers, FL, passed away Tuesday, Sept.
10, 2002 at Vassar Brothers Hospital, Poughkeepsie, NY. He was born in Paterson,
NJ May 19, 1923, son of the late Harry and Annie Joelson Jackson, he was a
resident of Fort Myers for 11 years.
Saul graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York
on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and he was commissioned in the field artillery. He had a
great deal of troop duty serving in combat during World War II in Europe, in
Korea, and in Vietnam in the 70th, 2nd, and 25th
Infantry Divisions respectively. He was wounded in World War II.
During his service Curley earned the Legion of Merit (IOLC), Purple Heart,
Bronze Star (IOLC), Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation
Medal, the Meritorious Unit Citation, the ROK Presidential Unit Citation, the
Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the DA General Staff Badge. After
retiring in 1974, Curley was appointed Commissioner of Correction for Nassau
County, New York. Recently Curley stated, 'As I look back over the years, I
thank God for having allowed me to go to West Point, to serve in the Army, to
have a rewarding second career, to have the blessing of two wonderful sons, and
finally, to have lived as long as I have.'
He is survived by his two sons, Harry Jackson and Peter Jackson.
Funeral services took place Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002 at 10 a.m. at The Jewish
Chapel, West Point, New York. Burial took place at Post Cemetery, West Point,
NY.
