SSG Frank Venegas

"A" Battery, 2/9th Arty
Chief of Smoke, 1967-68

Frank Venegas served with Lt Dennis Dauphin and Maj Jerry Orr in Vietnam.

He was the CSM of DivArty, 4th ID at Ft Riley, KS in 1977 prior to returning to Ft Sill, OK.  Frank returned to Ft Sill, Okla and became the Command Sergeant Major for III Corps Artillery Headquarters.   He retired from the US Army.

Frank was working as a construction job estimator in the Lawton, Okla area when last contacted.  His favorite hobby is making furniture.

CSM Frank Venegas died on February 27, 2012 in Lawton, OK.

I met Sgt Venegas in March, 1966 at Ft Bliss, TX.  He was a Drill Sergeant of the highest caliber, professional at all times and dedicated to his men.  I was the Unit Training Officer for C-2-3 of the BCT Brigade at Ft Bliss in Logan Heights.  I could not ask for any more support or respect from SSG Venegas.  I left C-2-3 in July, 1966 on a elongated trip to Vietnam, arriving in November, 1966.  You cannot imagine my surprise when in walks SSG Venegas into my "A" Battery and becomes my "Chief Of Smoke" some time in 1967.  I was extremely delighted to have this most reliable soldier as a key component of the leadership of "A" Battery.

Some years later, while performing Reserve Duty Training at Ft Sill, I happened to see CSM Venegas' name on a large sign listing the III Corps Artillery Commanding General with his name directly below.

Clearly, SSG Venegas achieved his military potential with such a high level assignment at Ft Sill.
